An interview with Liza Rifkin, owner and designer of Liza Michelle Jewelry, on how she creates her own Sunday Sanctuary. How do you create sanctuary in your life? For me creating sanctuary meant creating a space that felt safe and secure, that reflected who I am and what I want to project. I am an avid collector of all things, picking up doodads and whatsits wherever I go. My shelves are a reflection of that, showing off artifacts of places I’ve been and people I’ve met. I also love to fill my space with green things, plants are tucked in every nook and cranny, and I constantly have a shelf of vines propagating in the window. It has also been important to me to create a space where my friends and family felt welcome, and comfortable. I love to entertain and having a space ready to do that is the best feeling. What are your favorite Sunday activities that prepare you for the week ahead? Sunday’s are my ‘non-negotiable’ days off. I love having a slow morning with a pot of a coffee and my cookbooks as I plan my day of cooking. Cooking and baking have become my favorite creative outlets. There’s something so incredibly satisfying in creating something that can be shared and enjoyed and provides nourishment. If it’s nice, I take my dog out for a hike in the Metroparks - re-connecting in nature after what was probably a long week in the studio is such a nice respite from city life. If you could spend your Sunday anywhere in the world, where would you go? I am someone that has a hard time sitting still. Travel is a big goal + motivator for me. I think that more than a physical place I would want to be in a state of motion- of discovery and wonder. Give me my best friend and my boyfriend and plane tickets to wherever and I’m good to go! I love the Mansour Marrakech scent- its a little spicy and bright, a perfect Sunday pick-me-up.
